Maria Friedman at the Menier Chocolate Factory, London SE1
Is there a style of music that she cannot master? Well, I suppose we will have to wait another year or two before she unveils her hip-hop dominatrix routine. In the meantime, Maria Friedman's new show, Re-arranged, offers a near-encyclopaedic journey through the popular songbook, from Jacques Brel to Randy Newman, Irving Berlin to Suzanne Vega. All seasoned, of course, with lashings of Sondheim.
In a way, it is too much of a good thing. Friedman is so intent on cramming in favourites that she has ended up with a programme that could be trimmed by 20 minutes or so. While her singing is confident throughout - she can leap from smudged, bluesy phrases to pristine, Streisandesque power ballads - the evening tends to ramble amiably between songs.
